The best-selling author said it was “the most amazing journey” and shared a hopeful message on Twitter for those who may be struggling with alcohol.
“Hello! Today I am twenty-nine sober,” she began.
“Back in January 1994, I thought my life was over. But it was the most amazing journey.
“If you’re struggling or worried about alcohol, I promise you recovery is possible and you have nothing to lose.
The Limerick native spoke openly about her journey to sobriety on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 2017.
“Alcohol was the love of my life. It was my best friend.”
She also opened up about her battle with depression, saying it started “out of the blue.”
“One Sunday afternoon, at a barbecue, I started to feel very uneasy and I didn’t understand.
“Everything inside me started to speed up. It started to feel like I was dreaming that the person I was talking to wasn’t real.
“It just got worse and worse…I’ve never had anything like this before. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t talk.”
“Nothing worked except the passing of time. It ran its course. It was a disease and it cured itself,” she said, adding that her time in a mental hospital was “even less safe.” ” he said.
Appearing on The Late Late Show last year, Marian admitted that alcoholism became “eventually the only thing I care about.”
“My drinking was never normal in that I drank for the wrong reasons, because being me felt like wearing really tight shoes,” she said. I got

“Everybody said they were worried, but I couldn’t stand it because I thought, ‘I can’t do anything without this,’ and I couldn’t stand being me,” she said. I got
“So I made this lame suicide attempt. It was probably a cry for help at the time. But it meant there was no denying how bad things were.”
Marian began rehab in Ireland around the time she started writing.
“I started four months before the crash and it burned beautifully.
“I got out of rehab in March and signed a contract for three books in June. Watermelon was published 14, 15 months later.”
