San Francisco – (business wire)–One of the largest studies of participants enrolled in a digital health diabetes management program has been published in Vida Health. JMIR formative researchshowed a significant relationship between dramatic improvements in glycemic control and improved management of depression and diabetes.

the study, Improving glycemic control and depressive symptoms in adults with type 2 diabetes: a retrospective study, extracted from a sample of 1,128 participants with diabetes enrolled in Vida’s Integrated Digital Health Diabetes Management program. This program is designed to help members manage both their physical and mental health.

    The results are as follows.

    • Mean -1.9 point reduction in HbA1C at 4 months maintained at 1 year if baseline HbA1C ≥9

    • A mean -1.4 point reduction in HbA1C at 4 months that was maintained at 1 year if baseline HbA1C ≥8

    • Depressed vision-improved participants had almost a two-fold improvement in HbA1C.

    • 61% of participants experienced a reduction in depression sharpness

    • 55% of participants experienced worsening anxiety

Richard Frank, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Vida Health, said: “It is not surprising to us that patients who are supported as a whole show better outcomes than those who are treated in silos. We clearly need behavioral health support and are excited to be able to provide it to our patients.”

A single-arm retrospective design was used in this study. Participants were enrolled in the Vida Health Diabetes Management Program. This app-based intervention employs one-on-one remote sessions with a health coach, registered dietitian, and/or certified diabetes care and education specialist, and structured lessons and tools related to diabetes management and self-care. Participants provided baseline HbA1C values and follow-up values at least 90 days after program initiation. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) assessed self-reported depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively.

“The ability of our members to maintain clinically relevant short-term outcomes for 12 months is a testament to the effectiveness of Vida’s model of care for VidaHealth. Based on guidance and integrated behavior change interventions for both physical and mental health, I am very proud of our members and the ways we can foster their success.”
