Two Indianapolis police investigations are underway after three officers shot a man who was believed to be sleeping in his car, officials said.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team is conducting a criminal investigation into a shooting on the northeast side of the city early Saturday morning, and the Police Department of Internal Affairs has launched an administrative investigation.
In addition, the Civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board conducts mandatory hearings on attempts to use lethal force against a person.
The man is hospitalized and is in stable condition.
The officer involved in the shooting is on leave.
Officers were dispatched around 4 a.m. after receiving a call about a suspicious vehicle on the driveway, police said. They found a man believed to be sleeping in the driver’s seat with a gun.
A policeman knocked on the car window and said, “Police. Hands up,” said the Indianapolis Police Department.
It’s unclear why the officer fired, but police said detectives found a handgun in the driver’s seat.
Multiple police body cameras were activated during the shooting, the department said.
Police have not released the names of the injured or officers.
