LA CROSSE (WKBT) — A non-profit organization seeks expansion in the Cooley area.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace makes beds for needy children. The group will have a ‘building day’ in Thomas next month.
Organizers need about 100 volunteers to build 25 to 40 beds on the scheduled construction date of February 25th.
The nonprofit has chapters in the Viloqua, La Crosse, and central Wisconsin areas, but organizers say Monroe County is an area that needs attention.
“County nurses, school nurses, clergymen and everyone recognizes the need for better beds in orphanages,” said nonprofit member Gwen Nelson. “It’s so special to see a 3-year-old who was sleeping on the basement floor with a sleeping bag and then being laid on the bed and being cuddled. It’s wonderful.”
Volunteer people just join in on construction day, no equipment. Nelson says the nonprofit builds all beds from scratch, so if you can’t volunteer the time, donate lumber, blankets, pillows, sheets, or a financial offer.
