Mercedes F1 reserve driver Mick Schumacher entered the Race of Champions over the weekend and just missed out on the ‘Champion of Champions’ crown. Winner Matthias Ekström paid tribute to Mick’s father, Michael Schumacher, after winning his fourth championship and title.
Ekström dominated Schumacher’s time by 0.3.5s on the snow and ice of Pite Havesbad in his native Sweden, despite a fire in his car.
Talking about his victories, the Swedish driver looked back on his two wins against Michael Schumacher in 2007 and 2009. Ekstrom said:
“When I was here, I had two finals with Michael, and the race with Mick was very emotional.
“I know Michael very well. We fought a lot of great fights. I had a lot of special moments with Michael. [Mick’s] time is ahead of him. ”

Mick also spoke about the competition, branding Ekstrom an “extraordinary driver”. but missed it. Schumacher explained:
“Congratulations Matthias, he is an exceptional driver. I am very proud of him and thank you for your kind words.”
Schumacher was unable to extend his F1 contract with Haas and was hoping to secure another permanent seat for the upcoming 2023 season. It was later revealed that the young German driver had signed with Mercedes as their reserve driver for 2023, with Michael returning in 2010 after retiring.
The upcoming 2023 season kicks off with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 3-5, followed by pre-season testing the week before, with the car released by Haas on January 31.
