In 2023, it looks like more rock bands are already out of the woodwork. With the long-awaited release of Pierce The Veil and the return of Paramore on the horizon, it would be a good time to take in some underrated bands on the scene. , especially things like Sleep Token.
Sleep Token came onto the scene around 2016 with the self-produced record One. The band from across the pond only recently signed to a record label. Sleep Token is still flying under the radar, but recently their song “The Summoning” brought him to prominence on TikTok. Does it live up to the hype?
Lyrical Summary – 6/10
For the first half of its roughly seven minute run, the lyrics don’t seem to be the main focus of the piece. Music dominates the first few minutes. Obviously, music can be great with or without lyrics. However, looking at the first half of the lyrics, it’s hard to understand what they’re saying.
The second half of the song is where the real meat comes in. An example of this would be:
“Did I mistake you for a sign of God, or are you really here to cut me off? Or maybe just to turn me on.”
Music and vocals are equally important for these lyrics. However, the lyrics can stand alone and still be iconic. They are expertly crafted to suit the multiple tones of the song. Some of the lyrics leave something to be desired, but they still have a lot of charm.
Music Summary – 9/10
The song goes through multiple different tones and that’s what’s great about this song. The beginning of the song is so heavy that some might think it’s pure metal. As the song progresses, it gets a little more subdued to fit metalcore standards. This is evident from the main clean vocal. About a minute and a half before the song’s end, the song flips its head and makes its way to a groovy-sounding guitar, which, coupled with the staccato rhythm of the lyrics, gives it an entirely different tone.
The vocals are where this song comes out of the park. This is where the frontman shines, mainly in the chorus. While not lyrically dense, the frontman is able to show off his vocal range. As mentioned, he juxtaposes his vocals with his guitar to add a little punch to his words.
Summary – 7.5/10
Sleep Tokens are certainly not for sleeping. It’s not often that people see a metalcore band gaining momentum through his TikTok. If you like Bring Me The Horizon, this is a band you should check out.
