Why should women in the beauty industry be trained as mental health advocates?
There is a significant shortage of mental health resources available to the Black community, and The Confess Project of America is working to change that. The organization trains barbers across the United States to become mental health her advocates so they can effectively support their clients and communities.
Even before the civil rights movement, black barbershops and beauty salons were safe places for people in the black community to come together and be themselves. To date, The Confess Project of America has trained more than 2,000 of her barbers nationwide to become her mental health advocates. We use a treatment-based framework to educate barbers on four key points to reduce negative thinking and bias when discussing mental health topics.
With the launch of the Beauty Coalition, The Confess Project of America will reach even more people, begin to influence beauty salons and others, and provide important tools for mental health.
What should I expect from Beauty Coalition?
The Confess Project of America partners with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities to begin offering free mental health advocacy training to beauty salons, especially for women in the black community. The launch event will feature free mental health advocacy training, resources, lunches, vendors, networking opportunities, and panelist discussions with a variety of mental health advocacy and women in the beauty industry. Training isn’t just limited to salons, The Confess Project of America offers training to all technicians and women in the beauty industry. Beauty Coalition members not only become free, trained mental health her advocates, but also certificates, access to a private her network, media opportunities, and ongoing support via monthly Coalition phone calls.
