Patrick McCaffrey, the Hawkeyes’ third-leading scorer this season, plans to take indefinite leave to deal with his anxiety, according to a release by the Iowa Athletics.

He issued the following statement through the Iowa Men’s Basketball social media channels.

I’ve been battling anxiety for a while now and it’s peaked recently and it’s hampering my preparation and performance on the court. Anxiety affected my sleep, appetite, and stamina, resulting in me not having the energy levels I needed to reach my full potential. It affects every aspect and makes it incredibly difficult to function properly. Because of this, I am taking an indefinite leave of absence to deal with my situation. It could be two games, it could be four games, it could be more, and I’ll be back when I feel like it. My leave of absence has nothing to do with my past cancer battles.

The brother of Hawkeye wing Connor and son of head coach Fran, Patrick has appeared in all 14 Iowa games so far this season, playing 365 minutes on the team’s second-most courts. . He trails only forward Philippe Levraka in the minutes played.

Over that span, he averaged 12.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest.

According to 247Sports, director Fran McCaffery also addressed his son’s anxiety.

Patrick is one of millions of people who struggle with anxiety every day. It’s become more noticeable on and off the court in the last few weeks. Patrick is working through this with the full support of his family, coaches, teammates and administration. We all salute his courage and willingness to speak openly about this struggle. We are with him every step of the way.

Patrick will be unavailable for the match between Iowa (8-6, 0-3) and No. 15 Indiana (10-3, 2-0) at Carver Hawkeye Arena on Thursday, January 5 at 8pm.
