If learning how to drive is on your bucket list, you’re definitely not alone. After all, driving from school to the mall seems like something that makes you feel mature and independent.
But driving can be really intimidating, especially if you’re a new driver. Accepting responsibility is important. If driving scares you, here are some tips to help you beat your driving nerves.
use affirmations
Whenever you feel that you are starting to get nervous, repeat the affirmation. one idea? Repeat โI am in controlโ in your head or out loud while driving. These simple words can be a complete game-changer, and this simple reminder reminds you that you are in full control of your car (after all, you *literally* have the steering wheel). ).
To meditation
Just taking 5 minutes of deep breathing before getting behind the wheel can help you feel a little calmer while driving. All stress relief starts with your breathing, so close your eyes and focus on your breathing.
start small
The only way to become a better driver? Practice small things first (like driving around the neighborhood), then tackle bigger and scarier things (like driving down the highway). And don’t forget to be proud of yourself! Being able to drive up and down blocks may not seem like a celebration, but it’s important to acknowledge yourself how far you’ve come.
know the rules
Safe driving = knowing the rules of the road and applying them. And what if you follow them all with all your might? Don’t worry. If you’re on the go, you’ve earned that privilege by passing your licensing exam, so you really know more about driving than you believe yourself to. If you think you need to brush up, it doesn’t hurt to do some extra research before your next drive.
Leave it to an experienced driver
Sometimes it’s best to ask an experienced driver for advice. Are you afraid of parallel parking? Ask older siblings how they learned. Confused about certain rules? ask your parents. Trust us, they were in the same position – and perhaps they’d be more than happy to help.
