GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Wood) — On Saturday night, the Grand Rapids Griffins will host its second annual Mental Health Awareness Game.
The team is asking fans to support positive change around mental health issues and raise awareness in the mental health community of West Michigan.
The game is also designed around sensitive people.
“Goalhorns, pyros, lightsouts, there’s nothing exciting that usually affects them,” said Michael Kiel, senior account executive at the Griffins.
Sensory rooms are also provided where people can go if the crowds and noise get too loud. Those using the sensory room won’t have to miss the game as there is a muted TV showing the game.
Griffins players wear stickers on their helmets that support the “”.got itis a Western Michigan non-profit organization working to remove the stigma from discussions about suicide and mental health.
Last year, the Griffins were the first American Hockey League team to participate in the NHL’s Hockey Talk campaign.
“We are certainly proud of it. We have some teams that have started implementing it this season after doing it last season. We are thrilled to be able to bring this to life,” said Kiel.
