This week’s Spotlight Interview sheds light on our newest headache fellow, Mina Essak, DO. Essak talks about her work treating migraine and facial pain patients at the Morreene Road Clinic, how she transitioned from primary care to neurology during her medical school rotation, and becoming a ski instructor in another life. He will tell you why. He also shares his passion for the outdoors and hopes to ski in Banff this winter.
What are your current responsibilities as a headache fellow? What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day is spent at the Duke Neurology Moline Road Clinic. I am learning to treat patients with refractory migraine and facial pain from both a medication and treatment perspective. increase. Throughout the week you will also have the opportunity to rotate with other subspecialty clinics such as Neuro-Ophthalmology, Pain, CSF Leakage and OMF Clinics.
How did you become interested in neurology?
I enjoyed my neurology block in medical school, but primary care was my first choice. Just before starting my internship, I underwent a rotation in neurology and became deeply interested in the localization of neurological conditions and the importance of detailed neurological examination. We also found that a combination of urgent inpatient care was a favorable balance.
You recently completed your residency in the Ascension Macomb-Oakland Neurology Program. Please tell us one thing that left an impression on you from your experience as a resident.
The most memorable part of the residency is the camaraderie that was built between the residents and the care team. Some days were tough, but some days were longer than others. An amazing resident, his team, dedicated nursing staff, and supportive attendees have made his four years a wonderful and fulfilling one.
What are your plans after completing your fellowship? If you could do anything in the world, what would it be?
After the Fellowship I would like to practice mainly headache medicine combined with general neurology – hopefully here around Durham. My ideal job would be a “headache provider,” but to avoid clichés, I would be a ski instructor in another life.
What other passions and hobbies do you have outside of your studies?
i love being outdoors. He enjoys trails with his dog, Marlo, and is passionate about winter sports. I’ve skied in Colorado, Utah, and Switzerland, and hope to ski in Banff this winter.
