    Five officers fired from the Memphis Police Department last week have been charged with murder and other charges in the death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols earlier this month.

    Before police footage showing Nichols’ beating was released, the Memphis police chief said the footage was inhumane. Nichols’ family compared the footage to Los Angeles police beating Rodney King.

    Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said he was preparing for the release of the video. He said he supported the Memphis Police Chief’s decision to fire the officers involved.

    “I share the anger and outrage that comes from this tragedy. As we continue to improve police and community relations, there is always work to be done. We must evolve and do better.” We have to work hard,” Jennings said.

    Jennings said he and the department are closely monitoring events in Memphis.
