COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Just four days into the New Year, the Columbus Police Department responded to a shooting in the driveway of a home on Lawyers Lane in Columbus. Police say DeAndre Meadows, 23, has died after being shot multiple times.
Saturday night, family and friends gathered to celebrate the lives of sons, brothers, grandchildren, uncles and best friends.
The family filled the front yard where Meadows died. The balloon was released in honor of what the family says was a humble young man who never bothered anyone.
“Rest in peace Dre, Go Dawgs,” they all said as they tossed the balloons into the air.
Longtime family friend Bernice Carter says he loves the Meadows like it’s his own.
“Every time I saw Dre, he was smiling. Every time I saw Dre, he would say, ‘Mrs. Bernice, how are you?'” says Carter. “He was Dre. Remember him as Dre. Sometimes I said to him, ‘Dre, slow down that car.’ bottom. “
Meadow’s family is calling for the guns to be put down and they want justice.
“I’m really hurt right now. All I can say is stop the violence, stop the violence. It needs to stop,” Carter says.
“The Bible says, ‘Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord, and let us not take trouble into our own hands.’ Let the justice system prevail.” Yes,” says Cool Springs Baptist Pastor Alfred Bankley, Meadows’ cousin.
On Monday night, the family releases the University of Georgia balloons. Hopefully after the Bulldogs win the National College Football Championship. Meadows was a big UGA fan.
