Every year, the third Monday of January is known as Blue Monday and is considered the saddest day of the year.
The Blue Monday concept was unveiled in 2005 in a press release from British travel agency Sky Travel. Sky Travel quoted a psychologist as pointing out that the third Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year as a result of weather, Christmas bills and low motivation.

Now, 18 years later, many experts consider the day to be nothing more than a PR stunt by travel agencies.
David Mischoulon, clinical and research director of depression at Massachusetts General Hospital, explains:
“But as publicity, they’ve got quite a bit of traction. And now that concept is there. So people talk about Blue Monday.”
He said Blue Monday isn’t the exact day when more people feel depressed, it’s become a conversation surrounding seasonal depression and mental health as a whole.
“The winter months in general can be a difficult time for many, whether it’s seasonal depression or recurring depression.” As for the date, there is no difference from the days before and after that.”
According to the World Health Organization, approximately 450 million people suffer from mental health ailments every day. Weather has a big impact in Saskatchewan.

Seasonal depression is higher in cold, dreary climates because there is less sunlight during the winter months.
“Seasonal depression is thought to have something to do with the way sunlight hits the retina of the eye,” Mischoulon said.
If you’re dealing with depression or mental health issues, Mischoulon says the best thing to do is reach out to a therapist or medical professional.
“The best first step is to talk to your primary care physician and explain your concerns. Primary care physicians are qualified to treat depressive disorders,” he explained.
