5-6 million Russians suffer from mental and neurological disorders
According to official statistics from the Ministry of Health of Russia, about 2.1 million people undergo regular psychiatric and neurological examinations, but 3 to 4 million people who use anonymous private clinics can be added here. . A psychiatrist and pharmacotherapist at the Insight Clinic in Kazan Ruslan Tyumenev told Realnoe Vremya. Iskander Mindubayev, another medical professional cadet and chief physician at his Ibis medical center in Kazan, speaks of a minority of people with mental and neurological disorders. According to him, while 1.4 million people are undergoing routine check-ups, the actual number of mentally ill patients he has reached 3.8 million.
“Modern treatments for mental disorders have reached a peak of effectiveness. For 50 years I have known that psychotherapy is a large part of my work with patients.
He said two main modalities are used to treat psychiatric and neurological disorders – medication and psychotherapy. Medications can be prescribed – tranquilizers for inappropriate behavior, suicide attempts and hallucinations, psychosis and simply excessive psychomotor agitation – desire to do something, lack of sleep, panic and other symptoms, Antidepressants are also prescribed for the more familiar ones.
Tranquilizers remove painful sensory disturbances (hallucinations), thoughts (delirium), fear, agitation, and aggression. Tranquilizers have a sedative effect, remove emotional tension, anxiety and overexcitability, relax muscles and have a sedative effect. Iskander Mindubayev added that antidepressants improve bad moods and remove slow mental activity and mobility.
“Psychiatric and pharmacological therapy is one of the most effective ways to treat mental disorders, that is, using mind-affecting drugs and using psychotropic drugs. It largely depends on how wisely the medication was chosen,” the expert shared.

“There is also psychotherapy. In modern clinics, it is the work of a team of specialists, not just the patient. Group psychotherapy is the foundation for patients to establish social habits and change them.At the same time, there is also individual work with family members,” says the doctor, who says that treatment involves both We have shown that methods must be combined.
Ruslan Tyumenev said that these methods refer, first of all, to inpatient treatment. After being released, patients can continue to attend self-help groups. Self-help groups are plentiful in our country, and doctors can be turned to if you need drug support.
As Iskander Mindubayev said, other non-drug based treatments include:
- Transcranial magnetic stimulation is brain cell stimulation using a magnetic field. It is often used for depression, migraines, tinnitus, neuralgia, etc.
- Light therapy is exposure to light for seasonal depression, sleep disorders, and fatigue.
- Biofeedback is the latest method used to restore neurological, mental and physical condition with the help of special equipment, screens, computer programs and sensors placed on the patient. This method can be used for neurological disorders, neuroses and hyperexcitability.
- Dry needling is a method of placing needles at bioactive points in acupuncture. This method is used for neurotic states, panic attacks, sleep and other disorders.
- Psychiatric and pharmacotherapy are among the most effective methods for treating psychiatric and behavioral disorders.
“Depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis, dementia, psychiatric disorders are among the major mental disorders,” he added.
“Certainly there is a diagnostic problem.”
Ruslan Tyumenev pointed out not only the high effectiveness of modern treatments, but also the fact that there is a problem of diagnosing psychiatric and neurological disorders in Russian medicine. According to doctors, it is based entirely on the analysis of the patient’s behavior and thoughts and learning of their medical history.
“There is no precise medical marker for a specific disorder,” the expert concluded.

At the same time, Ruslan Tyumenev said that the patient must be admitted to the clinic. He states that this is necessary not only for yelling at walls or attempting suicide, but for mediocre lack of hygiene, for example.
“Inpatient clinics are always recommended for general diagnosis and primary care. You can,” added the expert.
Unwillingness to study or work may be a sign of illness
The tell-tale signs of psychiatric and neurological disorders are well known, including hallucinations, suicidal behavior, and delirium. But according to Ruslan Tyumenev, the list could include poor hygiene, lack of motivation to study or work, erratic behavior, disturbances in daily life, overeating or fasting, insomnia and dizziness. If you have such markers, the right option is to see a doctor.
“Many people have to live together, neighbors are alcoholics, drug addicts, gambling addicts, nervous breakdowns, elderly parents, people with dementia, etc. Constant scandals, accusations, threats, physical Physical abuse, suicide attempts are the first signs that something is wrong with society. The state of mind of those caught up in such conflicts.A person’s actions are repeated over and over again and they affect the lives of others. If it starts to affect you, we are talking about a mental illness and should be examined by a professional such as a psychiatrist or a pharmacotherapist.

At the same time, societal attitudes towards people with mental and neurological disorders are changing. Of course, doctors show that they have treated their patients with caution when they don’t get treatment and do nothing to stay healthy. Ordinary people rarely notice anything.
“When you’re talking to a schizophrenic who is on medication and sees a psychiatrist or psychotherapist on a regular basis, it’s very unlikely that you’ll notice anything. How will change? It won’t, ”summed Ruslan Tyumenev.
Iskander Mindubayev has a slightly different opinion. He said there are still some taboos on the topic of psychiatric and neurological disorders in society that need to be removed to raise people’s awareness and reduce the level of prudence.
